'The Bush Sprites' 1/1 Original Acrylic on canvas
$850.00
While travelling through Europe in Barcelona in 2014, I came across an exhibition that has stayed with me ever since. Towering canvases stretched from floor to ceiling, marked with bold black brushstrokes unlike anything I’d seen. The Japanese works had a depth and weight that completely absorbed me. That moment sparked something in me, and by the time I left Europe, I knew I wanted to create art myself.
When I returned home, I bought the largest canvases I could find, along with black and white house paint and thick brushes. I experimented with long, slow brush strokes and heavy textures, even dropping paint from above.
This was the first piece I created. A year ago, I felt ready to paint over it.
I began reworking it during an art retreat in Dwellingup with the North Coast Art Club, but the final layers eluded me. Late in 2025, while colouring with my four‑year‑old daughter, I was inspired to add the white block panels—just like the drawings we colour in together. And with that, after 11 years, the piece finally felt complete.
“The Bush Sprites” now carries traces of Japanese influence, the Dwellingup bush, and moments shared with my daughter. I hope you enjoy it — from my family to yours x
